Improve Prostate Health with Supplements for Prostate Support
Prostate health is important, especially as you age. Learn about your prostate, the unfortunate prostate conditions that can happen as you age, and how supplements for prostate support can help.
What Is The Prostate?
The prostate is a small gland found below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It wraps around the upper part of the urethra. The urethra carries the urine from the bladder out of the body. So when there are prostate problems, it can impact urinating and sexual function.
The prostate plays a critical role in reproduction. For men, the prostate helps produce semen. It helps create the viscous fluids in how sperm travels in the body.
Prostate Conditions
Harvard Health, unfortunately, predicts that most men will have problems with their prostate at some point in life. The prostate can fall under three diagnoses when there are problems.
Prostatitis
The first is prostatitis. This is when the prostate is infected or if there’s inflammation in the prostate gland. There are two types: acute and chronic. Acute is caused by an infection and symptoms include sudden painful urination with a small stream, fever, and chills. The infection can happen when the body accidentally targets the prostate with inflammatory compounds. It can also happen if a bacterial or fungal infection goes untreated. Lastly, other triggering symptoms include certain foods, stress, depression, chronic pain conditions, trauma to the genitourinary area, or repeated biopsies.
Chronic prostatitis is also called chronic pelvic pain syndrome and has less defined symptoms. Symptoms include recurrent or persistent pelvic discomfort, pain or burning when urinating, an increased urge to urinate and struggling to empty your bladder. Chronic inflammation can be caused with or without an infection, which is why symptoms are hard to define.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
The second is when there’s aging-related enlargement of the prostate gland. It’s called benign prostatic hyperplasia. It’s also called enlarged prostate and usually occurs after age 50 as it can triple or double in mass as you get older. BPH is expected to be part of the aging process for most men. As the prostate enlarges, it pinches off the urethra. This causes the bladder to work harder as there are problems with urinating.
To avoid prostatitis, you should avoid:
- A sedentary lifestyle
- Obesity
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Diet high in sugar, red meat, and refined grains
Prostate Cancer
The last is prostate cancer. This is when there’s a growth of cancerous cells inside the prostate. This can cause more problems as it can spread and affect other parts of the body. If it spreads to other parts of the body it can be regionally advanced or metastatic. Regionally advanced means it spreads to surrounding tissue. A metastatic spread means it spreads to more distant sites.
